What does a city look like for and by women?

"We live in the city of men. Our public spaces are not designed for female bodies." Intrigued? A city for and by women is the subject of the first Maak de Stad debate, organised by USI and Stadsform. Guests: Prof. Leslie Kern (author of Feminist City), Sabine Miedema (Kind & Samenleving), and Prof. Els De Vos (Faculty of Design Sciences, UAntwerpen). Moderator: Luce Beeckmans (Professor in Architecture and Urbanism related to Migration and Diversity at Ghent University).

Doc City: Push

Housing prices in cities all over the world are rising. The incomes of its inhabitants are not doing so. The documentary PUSH sheds light on a new kind of faceless landlord and an escalating crisis that affects us all. Stadsform will discuss the documentary and the Belgian housing market via a livestream with: director Fredrik Gertten, Prof. Manuel Aalbers (author of 'The Financialization of Housing'), and Line Algoed (COSMOPOLIS & co-author of 'On Common Ground'). USI seminar "Language, discourse & communication"

In this USI seminar on Thursday 26 November 2020, Mieke Vandenbroucke will present part of her research demonstrating how linguistics can help to understand urban change and socio-economic dynamics. The emphasis however will be on exchanging ideas with other USI members, to open up the dialogue between linguistics and other disciplines.

Inequality and the City in the Low Countries

Bruno Blondé had a 15-minute talk about the new book "Inequality and the City in the Low Countries (1200-2020)" in the Boekenmarathon. This book engages with the complex interplay between urbanisation and inequality. It questions whether the historic poly-nuclear and decentralised urban system of the Low Countries contributed to specific outcomes in social inequality.
