Sinds dit weekend mogen we ons niet alleen wereldkampioen maar ook Europees kampioen noemen! De zonnewagen BluePoint reed op zondag om 13 uur als winnaar over de streep van de iLumen European Solar Challenge. Een record aantal gereden rondjes was te danken aan een snelle wagen en een sterke strategie. Dit is de derde overwinning op rij voor het Agoria Solar Team, na winst in Chili in 2018 en op het wereldkampioenschap in Australië in 2019.

Since this weekend, we can not only call ourselves world champion but also European champion. The solar car BluePoint was the winner of the iLumen European Solar Challenge on Sunday at 1pm. A record number of laps was driven thanks to a fast car and a strong strategy. This is the third win in a row for the Agoria Solar Team, after winning in Chile in 2018 and at the World Championship in Australia in 2019.

INTENSE RACE

Het Agoria Solar Team nam deel aan de race met twee zonnewagens, de BluePoint en de Punch 2. De BluePoint, de nieuwste wagen van het team, kwam met het hoogste aantal rondjes over de finish. Zo nam het Belgische team de titel mee naar huis. Deze overwinning is te danken aan een snelle wagen en een racestrategie die sterk verschilde van andere teams: "Tijdens deze wedstrijd is het toegelaten om de batterij twee keer op te laden. Wij hebben gekozen om maar een keer op te laden, waardoor we een uur langer rondes konden rijden", aldus Romanie Cnockaert, stratege van het Agoria Solar Team. Door de gunstige weersomstandigheden werd het record van hoogste aantal rondes op 24 uur door zonnewagens met een vierde verbeterd!

The Agoria Solar Team took part in the race with two solar cars, the BluePoint and the Punch 2. The BluePoint, the team's newest car, crossed the finish line with the highest number of laps. This is how the Belgian team took home the title. This victory is due to a fast car and a racing strategy that differed greatly from other teams: "During this race, it is allowed to charge the battery twice. We opted to charge only once, which allowed us to drive one hour longer laps," said Romanie Cnockaert, strategist of the Agoria Solar Team. Due to the favorable weather conditions, the record of highest number of laps in 24 hours was improved by a fourth by solar cars!

De Punch 2, de wagen die het team bouwde in 2017, finishte vijfde in de race. Het grote verschil is te wijten aan de leeftijd van de wagen. De wagens maken generatie na generatie gebruik van de allernieuwste technologieën die voortdurend veranderen. Dit is tevens ook een van de redenen waarom het Solar Team telkens een volledig nieuwe zonnewagen bouwt voor het tweejaarlijks wereldkampioenschap.

The Punch 2, the car the team built in 2017, finished fifth in the race. The big difference is due to the age of the car. The cars use generation after generation the very latest technologies that are constantly changing. This is also one of the reasons why the Solar Team keeps building a completely new solar car for the biennial World Championship.

DERDE OVERWINNING
THIRD VICTORY

De overwinning op het Europees Kampioenschap is de derde overwinning op rij voor het Belgische Solar Team. In 2018 finishte het team als eerste na de uitdagende Carrera Solar Atacama in Chili, dwars door de Atacama-woestijn. Het jaar daarop werd het team wereldkampioen dankzij een spannende overwinning in de Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, het wereldkampioenschap voor zonnewagens.

The victory at the European Championship is the third victory in a row for the Belgian Solar Team. In 2018 the team finished first after the challenging Carrera Solar Atacama in Chile, across the Atacama desert. The following year, the team became world champion thanks to an exciting victory in the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, the world championship for solar cars.
